Her soft caress lifts the morning sun forget the world forget life’s lone beating heart sweet dreams arise and then they fall away the time is now and I hold my head up high. White lies and other small mercies, ain’t nothing going to stop this hurting White lies and other small mercies, ain’t nothing going to stop this hurting now I take my love and I hold it against the sun the times been spent but there’s so much left undone the time is now, the wise mans words arise I take my gun and hold it to the sun. White lies and other small mercies, ain’t nothing going to stop this hurting White lies and other small mercies, ain’t nothing going to stop this hurting now I take my gun and hold it against the sun I take my gun and I hold it against the sun I take my gun and hold it against the sun I take my gun and I hold it against the sun

Try to find the light Try to find the light Lets talk about love that mysterious air that momentous clarity the sound light makes as it falls through red glass revealing all it touches with heat heat, that’s the sound of love burning a scent warm and sweet a luminous narcotic fog adrift on the ocean of love Believe in me Those wild declarations those moments of indiscrete abandon check that picture that just fell from the wall the one lying broken on the floor like so many beautiful dreams the dreams that haunt the sleep of the lonely and misbegotten love you’re a sound that’s lost all meaning love where are you when I need you Believe in me. Believe in me Believe in me Try to find the light Try to find the light Try to find the light Try to find the light Hold me Kiss Me Touch Me Want Me believe in me Hold me Kiss Me Touch Me Want Me believe in me Hold me Kiss Me Touch Me Want Me believe in me Hold me Kiss Me Touch Me Want Me believe in me

Looking for love on the outskirts of town kicking at stones and looking for something kicking at stones getting lost in the rain thinking about things I think I should have known something What goes around comes around life’s like a storm in a teacup baby what goes around goes around goes around goes around What goes around comes around What goes around comes around Where do I find the words to reveal the shape of a heart I haven’t seen lately where do I find where I threw love away left it out in the rain watched it wash away? What goes around comes around life’s like a storm in a teacup baby What goes around comes around What goes around comes around What goes around comes around What goes around comes around Looking for love on the outskirts of town when I was a boy it all seemed so easy on the outskirts of a town a ghost of man still hanging around and I’m still dreaming on the outskirts of town a ghost of a man still hanging around and I’m still dreaming.

She’s leading me on and I know that I’m on the road to disaster she’s leading me on but I need some love so bad I need some love I need some love so bad. Everything’s turned to dust I’m losing sight of the both of us there’s a rhythm inside my head it feels like snow falling on the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio Everything’s turned to stone everything’s lost its colour there’s a sound inside my head I call it snow falling on the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio On the radio

Here’s a dream lets turn out the light and let love flow lie down here put tomorrow aside and let love flow There’s a moment like the sun at the edge of the day when light disappears and time falls away there’s a rumour in my heart like the movement of sand it’s a thing I don’t understand There’s a river and its made out of time it’s called love flows like the water from a spring underground it’s called love flows There’s a dream, a thing I hold in my hand it’s a measure of faith and I don’t understand it’s a simple understatement of words held apart you’re the light I hold in my heart There’s a dream called carry me back to where love flows one more day might be too late so let love flow You’re the movement of a heart I don’t understand you’re a vision of a life I hold in my hand there’s a space caught alive between you and I it’s a river and it’s made out of time.

Nothing lasts forever nothing stays the same we could make each other crazy we could figure out a change. Lets sort it out Lets find a way Lets figure out Lets try again Sometimes it don’t seem right but who the hell am I to say sitting back here trying to figure out loves complicated game. Everyone is turning and everything remains we could make each other crazy we could bend it till it breaks. Lets sort it out Lets find a way Lets figure out Lets start again Sometimes it don’t seem right but who the hell am I to say sitting back here trying to figure out loves complicated game. Put that thing away boy its only going to screw you up love love that’s love yeah.

Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Since the beginning of time we have been considering the question of love. Love, what is love? Is it as science describes, a biological principle? Yet the question remains, is this all there is to the love that we feel so deeply that affects us so profoundly? Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. When considering the question of love we must also consider the words of the great mystics their words tell us of another kind of love a love that eternal a love that is omnipotent a love upon which all that is rests. Hmmm, at this juncture we must begin to recognise that love is indeed a many faceted thing. Love is warm, love is kind, love is gentle, love is blind love is creative, love is giving, love is wild and love is living. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Chaos gives rise to form and form leads to order order is the precursor of disorder and so-on back to chaos. Therefore my friends I tell you is the path of love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. It is in the motion of the ocean that we find ourselves with a metaphor for the ebb and flow of love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love. Love, love, love, love.

It’s been kind of rough here at the edge today sure could use a little sleep get away from the light the noise and the hustle my heart is heavy my eyes are raw my head is aching a little time away from myself is that the best I can hope for somewhere to remove myself lose myself collect myself in silence? The wind blows the wind blows across a drifting tide. We started out as sunshine we ended up as rain we started out as sunshine we ended up as rain. Say, do someone who might be carrying something a little stronger? something to lift me something to help me carry on something to keep me from sleeping because when I sleep I dream and all I ever dream about is how much better things might have been had I been a better man a stronger man. A line from J.J Cale to keep me from sleeping and a little tequila to remind me who I am. The wind blows the wind blows across a drifting tide. We started out as sunshine we ended up as rain we started out as sunshine we ended up as rain. She started out as sunshine she ended up as rain as lovers often do especially the really good ones those few who get under your skin the ones who make you crazy drive you to distraction, dissatisfaction. Hell, I would give anything to taste her again just one more time. Give me another shot of tequila I don’t want to go to sleep when I sleep I dream and all I ever dream about is how much better things might have been had I been a different man. We started out as sunshine we ended up as rain we started out as sunshine we ended up as rain we started out as sunshine we ended up as rain we started out as sunshine we ended up as rain. We started out as sunshine.

about

L.O.V.E is a collection of songs that explores that most all pervasive of human conditions, romantic love. L.O.V.E is also an homage to everything we have ever loved about pop music. Both born in the early 1960’s, Zed and I were weaned on a style of pop that included the heyday of Motown, the sun-drenched melodies of Beach Boy era California, swinging London, Broadway, Disco, MOR, AOR and The Brill Building.

It came at us from the television, the movie screen but mostly from Top Forty Radio. During the recording of L.O.V.E there were numerous discussions about musical memory and at some stage we understood that the music we were crafting was but an expression of the sounds that defined our youth.

Zed and I met at Mobil Hillcrest sometime in the mid-1980s. I was pumping gas, he was driving a van containing all sorts of musical equipment. I asked about it and he said he was building a recording studio just around the corner up on Morrinsville Rd. He suggested I pop in sometime. I did.

We clicked immediately and over the next few years set out on all manner of musical explorations. The studio, a 16 track analogue affair called Tandys, was our instrument and the sky was our limit. Our output was sporadic but our adventures exciting and educational.

When Zed built NZ’s first fully digital studio (The Zoo) up the North end of Hamilton’s main street in the early 1990’s I followed and together we recorded The Wallflower, a sort of sci-fi country album. It sold 240 copies before disappearing from view but still stands today as the most ambitious recording project undertaken in that fair city. Exhausted by the project we went our separate ways, Zed to WINTEC where he gained a degree and started a teaching career, me to a career in sales (FMCG).

We met up again in 2015. Zed was now a senior lecturer at MAINZ in Auckland where I was working as a jobbing writer. Over a casual beer he suggested I visit his home studio. “No,” I thought to myself. I considered my music making days long over. Still, before I knew it there I was sitting before a microphone with Zed asking what I had.

Over the course of the next two and half years Brookes & Johnstone have quietly evolved into a boutique label called Rhythmstick with a small roster of artists under development. Central to the cause is our own work. Starting where we left off with The Wallflower back in 1995, L.O.V.E has been a long time in the making.

As for the two of us? Of the pair, Zed is the most accomplished and his many achievements include Step Chant Unit who scored Hamilton’s first chart hit of the modern era. Painting Pictures (1985) peaked at number 34 on the national charts and led Zed to a spot on the legendary Radio with Pictures.
Zed’s influence on the Waikato music is hard to quantify but it might be said that he single handedly raised the bar of excellence for the region. Pretty anyone and everyone of any significance from that era worked with Zed’s at some stage or another. More about Zed here -https://www.audioculture.co.nz/people/zed-brookes.

As for Johnstone, he’s mostly a Waikato farm hand and a gardener. He writes and makes music and like Zed, loves the studio and the process of bringing songs to life.
